Candle Care

Preparing Your Candle for the First Burn

Before lighting your candle for the first time, it’s important to ensure your wick is the correct length. We recommend using a wick trimmer for a clean, precise cut that helps maintain the wick's integrity. Trim the wick to about ¼” in length before lighting, and be sure to trim it to this size each time you burn your candle. Always trim the wick when the candle is cool to avoid debris falling into the hot wax.

Next, find the perfect spot for your candle. The ideal surface should be flat, heat-resistant, and away from drafts. Keep your candle out of reach of pets, children, and any delicate or elaborate draperies. (We love a beautiful window treatment, but it’s best to keep them away from fire!)

Now, you’re ready to light your candle! While a lighter works great for the initial lighting, as the wax level decreases, we recommend using a long match to safely reach the wick without burning your fingers.

Babysitting Your Candle

For the best burn, your candle needs just the right balance of attention. Most surfaces aren’t perfectly level, so we recommend rotating your candle 180 degrees every 30 minutes to ensure an even melt pool.

Candle Troubles? We’ve Got You Covered!

It's essential for your candle to burn evenly across the surface every time. The time it takes to fully liquefy the wax depends on various factors, such as the wax type, fragrance, surface, and room temperature. Typically, this takes between 2 to 4 hours. The goal is to give your candle enough time to fully melt across the surface, creating a pleasant and relaxing experience.

However, sometimes life happens, and you may need to extinguish your candle before it's completely melted. This can leave behind a “memory ring,” which leads to tunnel burning—a condition where the wax burns straight down the middle, wasting wax along the sides. To fix this, simply place a tin foil candle hat on top while burning, and it will help melt the wax evenly.

Keeping Your Candle Clean

To minimize soot and smoke, always keep your wick trimmed and your candle free of debris. Even with the best care, some soot may collect on the inside of the jar over time. Cleaning this is simple: just grab a paper towel and a little coconut oil, and gently rub it on the soot to remove it.

Candle Burning Don'ts

To ensure your candle burns safely and efficiently, remember these important guidelines:

  • Never leave your candle unattended.
  • Avoid playing with the wax or moving it around the jar—this will create uneven burning.
  • Limit burn time to 4 hours—burning longer can cause the wick to "mushroom" and create an unstable flame.
  • Trim your wick regularly—untrimmed wicks cause popping, smoking, and soot, leaving your candle looking messy.
  • Do not burn in a small, unventilated room.
  • Never fall asleep with a candle burning.

Finally, Enjoy!

With these tips, you're all set to enjoy the full experience of your candle. Light it, relax, and let it create the perfect ambiance for your space.
